Tea Set by Henry Crissman

Artist's Statement

My goal is to sustain a life of creative exploration, to challenge my mental, physical and social capacities and apply them toward causes larger than myself. Contemporary art, is a supportive and non-polemical system, that invests into sensory, social and intellectual advancement. It is a key to unlock our cultural complexities, which allows us to critically access and reconfigure the structures of our world. The alignments of my goal and art's opportunities have lead me to pursue of my goal as art.

Building on historically interactive and cross cultural application of ceramics, I am implementing alternative ceramic production and distribution techniques in efforts to facilitate and instigate exchanges that confront issues, expose ideas and engage publics in dialog regarding contemporary art and art education.

My art then exists plurally, as the result of the experience, the experience itself and as the spectacular elements that assist in facilitating these experiences. Displays of ingenuity and craftsmanship can develop intrigue and suspend disbelief in a project's intent. Objects may host experiences, represent them after the fact and fund new ones in the future. Signage, social media campaigns, grass roots organizational techniques and printed materials all aid in developing critical mass, ambiance and engagement.

But as these individual aspects may support a project, decisions about which to employ and how are entirely sight specific; dependent on the who, what, where, when and why. The only constant then is myself: a perpetual student, enthusiastic diplomat and dedicated teacher.
